Stored Crops: The Search for Food Security

Abstract: Growing crops and protecting them until used for consumption has been a major preoccupation of mankind since the inception of agriculture. Storage is an essential interim operation in the food pipeline that moves crops from producer to processor and foodstuffs from processor to consumer. It brings into equilibrium the quantitative fluctuations derived from the imbaIance of supply and demand. While quality is now the main concern in the developed countries, quantitative losses are still serious in the developing world. Further international support is needed to fund R&D and technology transfer to those communities, concludes Dr Shlomo Navarro from The Volcani Center, Israel.
