This is the famous or infamous "Homeni" beetle which invaded Israel in the 1980s and has become an agricultural pest particularly of groundnuts. It probably did arrive from Iran and was described for the first time by Dr. Argaman who gave it an appropriate name which in Hebrew translates to "bothersome". They are strongly attracted to light and have a tendency of falling straight into your soup if you are eating outdoors in the evening.
