EZRA (JONATHAN) DONAHAYE Ph.D.

Jonathan Donahaye

I was educated in England and graduated in 1958 from Imperial College London, with a B.Sc. degree in Zoology and Applied Entomology.

In 1960 I emigrated to Israel, and soon after, I started my career in Stored-Product Entomology at the Department of Plant Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture in Jaffa. After a break between 1975 and 1981, I returned to the Department of Stored Products which by then had been transferred to the Volcani Center of the Agricultural Research Organization in Bet Dagan.

In 1986 I received a Ph.D. in Entomology, from the Hebrew University Jerusalem, the title of my thesis being: "Studies on the development of resistance to modified atmospheres in the stored product insect Tribolium castaneum Herbst."

My major field of interest

Over the last 20 years I have been involved in many aspects of stored-product research, but my particular interest has been in the use of non-chemical methods for controlling stored-product insects with respect to the storage problems of less-developed countries.
With the encouragement and funding of international agencies and an NGO specializing in the transfer of sustainable technologies to grass-roots agricultural cooperatives, I have participated in many projects, both in applied research and extension, with partners from several countries in the third world.
Much of my effort has been devoted to developing storage systems for the small-scale and even subsistence farmers. These are based on the principle of hermetic storage which we are convinced can provide user-friendly solutions to the ever present need for food security in the third world.
Furthermore, the development of much needed alternatives to the fumigant Methyl Bromide was not neglected.

I am now retired but am continuing my activities within the framework of FTIC. Also among my activities I am preparing a web-site devoted to insects of Israel including a check-list and photo displays.

Here is a selected list of publications before my retirement in 2000 and in which I am first author:
